Advantages of a UniFi network over a conventional one

By IPProtec · · 5 min read

Quick answer

The main advantages of a UniFi network are managing the whole infrastructure from one console, no licences, VLAN segmentation with a zone-based firewall, professional WiFi with roaming and the option to add cameras and access control in the same system.

1. Everything on one console

Gateway, switches and access points appear in the same application. You see which device is connected to which point, how much it uses and whether something fails. If you also install cameras or access control, they're managed on the same console.

2. No licences or subscriptions

Many professional vendors charge annual licences for cloud management or security features. With UniFi, the applications and remote management through UniFi Site Manager have no fee.

3. A segmented, more secure network

With VLANs and the zone-based firewall you separate computers, guests, cameras, smart-home or POS. If a cheap IoT device is compromised, it can't reach your equipment.

4. Professional WiFi

Several wired access points with one network name and roaming between them, instead of repeaters that cut speed.

5. Phased growth

You can start with network and WiFi and add cameras or access control later without changing platform, as long as the gateway and switches are properly sized.

Limits to keep in mind

  • Performance of features such as IDS/IPS depends on the gateway model.
  • Some advanced features depend on the software version and the specific hardware.
  • In Spain, UniFi Talk needs a third-party SIP provider.
  • A wrong configuration cancels out many advantages: design matters.
