Networks, WiFi and security for industrial units

In an industrial unit prior design isn't optional: height, metal racking, machinery and distances completely change how WiFi and cameras behave.

In short: In an industrial unit we first design coverage and architecture: access points adapted to height and racking, fibre or radio links between buildings, perimeter and dock cameras, and access control for vehicles and restricted areas.

Common situations

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • Terminals and handhelds losing connection.
  • Separate buildings without network.
  • A large perimeter that's hard to watch.
  • Truck entries not logged.

Installation for industrial units, in detail

UniFi Network

01

Offices and rack

Problem: The office and the warehouse work as separate networks.

Solution: Main rack in the offices with gateway, switches and UPS; from there the network is distributed to the warehouse.

UniFi Network

02

Industrial WiFi

Problem: Patchy coverage between racks and at height.

Solution: Coverage survey and access points placed according to the warehouse's real layout.

UniFi Network

03

Link between buildings

Problem: Buildings separated by the yard without conduit.

Solution: Point-to-point wireless link between roofs, or fibre if there's conduit.

UniFi Building Bridge · Fibre optic

UniFi Protect

04

Loading docks

Problem: Goods claims with no footage.

Solution: Cameras over the docks with enough resolution to identify.

Architecture

How the installation is organised

Installation architecture
  1. 1

    Prior design

Plans, height, racking and coverage survey.

  2. 2

    Core

Gateway and switches in the office rack.

  3. 3

    Distribution

Fibre or radio to the warehouse and outbuildings.

  4. 4

    Access layer

Industrial or PoE switches per area.

  5. 5

    Security

Cameras, sensors and access control centralised.

Things to bear in mind

  • Coverage design

Essential before buying hardware: the real building behaves differently from the plan.

  • Work at height

Planned with the right equipment and outside production hours if necessary.

  • Environment

Dust, temperature and humidity determine equipment choice.

FAQ

Questions about industrial units

Why does an industrial unit need prior design?

Because height, metal racking and machinery affect WiFi propagation and camera angles. Without a survey it's easy to fall short or overdo it.

Can you connect separate buildings without trenching?

Yes, with point-to-point wireless links if there's line of sight between both points.

Shall we design your warehouse network?

We start with a coverage and architecture survey.
