UniFi Protect: what it is and what we can install
Video surveillance with local recording, smart detection and mobile access.
- Definition
- UniFi Protect is Ubiquiti's video surveillance platform: it records UniFi cameras locally on a console or NVR, detects people and vehicles, and lets you watch live and review footage from your phone or browser with no monthly fees.
How it works
Recordings are stored on the disk of a compatible Cloud Gateway or a UniFi NVR inside your premises, not in a third-party cloud. Remote access is encrypted through UniFi Site Manager and the UniFi Protect app.
The range includes dome, turret, bullet, compact, 360°, PTZ cameras and video doorbells, plus sensors (entry, motion, glass break, environmental, smoke and CO) and sirens that work in the same automations.

What UniFi Protect can do
Local recording
Continuous or event-based, on the console or a UniFi NVR. Enhanced Retention lowers the quality of older footage to keep more days.
Smart detections
Person and vehicle detection to alert only on what matters; AI-series cameras and AI Key/AI Port add capabilities such as face or licence plate recognition.
Licence plate recognition
With the right camera (AI LPR for vehicle entrances with speed or distance) plates are logged and can be used to open gates with UniFi Access.
Alarm Manager
If-this-then-that automations: if a person is detected in the garden at night, switch on the floodlight and notify your phone.
Sensors and alarms
Entry, motion, glass break, environmental and smoke/CO sensors, sirens and key fobs that work inside Protect.
Viewing
Mobile app, browser, UniFi Protect Viewport for monitors and video walls in Site Manager.

Important caveats
- Reliable plate reading depends on the camera, angle, distance and vehicle speed. For vehicle entrances we recommend the AI LPR and a placement survey.
- Face recognition and other advanced features depend on the camera and software version; we confirm them model by model during design.
- CCTV installations must comply with data protection law (signage, no more public road than strictly necessary, limited retention). We advise on camera placement.

Questions about UniFi Protect
Does UniFi Protect have a monthly fee?
No. Recording, detections and remote access require no subscription. The cost is the hardware (cameras, console or NVR and disks) and installation.
Where are recordings stored?
On the disks of the UniFi console or NVR installed at your home or business. You can watch them remotely, but they are not uploaded to a third-party cloud.
How many days of recording will I get?
It depends on the number of cameras, resolution, recording mode and disk capacity. We calculate storage during design to meet the days you need.
Can I use cameras from other brands?
UniFi Protect supports compatible third-party ONVIF cameras with limited features compared with UniFi cameras. We assess it case by case when there are existing cameras to reuse.
