Hotel WiFi: design and common mistakes
By IPProtec · · 6 min read
Quick answer
Hotel WiFi is designed floor by floor: access points in rooms or corridors depending on construction, high-density coverage in common areas, an isolated guest network with portal, separate networks for management and POS, and centralised monitoring.
Rooms: inside or in the corridor
An access point in the corridor can cover several rooms if the walls allow; in heavy construction, an in-wall access point in each room performs better and also provides network outlets for the TV.
Common areas
Reception, restaurant, lounges and pool concentrate many users at once: they're designed for capacity.
Separate guests and management
Guests on an isolated network, with portal or codes and bandwidth limits; management, POS, cameras and telephony on their own networks.
Common mistakes
- A consumer router per floor with different network names.
- A guest password unchanged for years.
- Forgetting the pool and terraces.
- Not being able to see what's happening until complaints arrive.
