What is UniFi and what is Ubiquiti? A clear guide for non-technical readers
By IPProtec · · 6 min read
Quick answer
Ubiquiti Inc. is a US manufacturer of networking equipment. UniFi is its platform: a set of devices (gateways, switches, WiFi access points, cameras, access readers, phones) managed together from a console and the UniFi app, with no licences or fees.
Ubiquiti, UI.com and UniFi: three names, one simple relationship
- Ubiquiti Inc. is the company that designs and makes the equipment.
- UI.com is its official website and store; techspecs.ui.com is its technical catalogue.
- UniFi is the platform: hardware plus software applications managed together.
When someone searches for a “Ubiquiti installer” or a “UniFi installer”, in practice they're looking for the same thing: someone who designs, installs and configures UniFi equipment.
What the UniFi platform includes
UniFi is organised into applications that run on a console (usually a Cloud Gateway):
| Application | What it's for | Example equipment |
|---|---|---|
| UniFi Network | Router, firewall, switches and WiFi | Cloud Gateways, USW switches, U7 access points |
| UniFi Protect | Video surveillance, sensors and alarms | G6 and AI cameras, NVRs, video doorbells |
| UniFi Access | Access control for doors and gates | G3 readers, Door Hub, Gate Hub, Intercom |
| UniFi Talk | IP telephony | G3/G2 Touch phones |
| UniFi Connect | Displays, EV charging, audio | Connect Display, EV Station |
| UniFi Drive | Network storage | UNAS |
How it differs from a typical router and cameras
- One console: network, cameras and access are viewed and configured in the same place.
- No licences or subscriptions: features and remote management have no fee.
- Local data: recordings are stored on your premises, not in a third-party cloud.
- Scalable: start with one access point and grow to hundreds of devices.
Who is it for?
Large homes or villas where a router doesn't reach, businesses that want a secure network and centralised management, and any project where network, cameras and access need to work together. For a small flat with simple needs, a compact device such as the UniFi Express 7 or a Cloud Gateway Ultra with one access point may be enough.
